PUMA's Rule-Breaking Fast-RB Nitro Elite 2 Lands October 28, and It's Still Not Race-Legal

PUMA built a super shoe that is not allowed in races, and now it has built a second one on purpose. The PUMA Fast-RB Nitro Elite 2 launches October 28 in a limited run through PUMA.com, select PUMA stores and select retailers across the US, the UK, Central Europe, the Nordics, Latin America, Thailand, Japan, China and Australia. In Europe it sits at €349.95, and PUMA's EU store says orders open at 23:00 UTC on October 27, which is 7 PM ET that Tuesday night.

The "RB" stands for Rule Breaking, and PUMA means it literally. The first Fast-RB ran a 58 mm stack, a full 18 mm over the World Athletics limit for road racing. Version 2 keeps the outlaw attitude but goes on a serious diet: PUMA says it is more than 100 g lighter than the original, landing at about 250 g in a UK 8, with the heel-to-toe drop cut from 12 mm to 8 mm. Underfoot it pairs two fused carbon-fiber plates (PUMA calls it PWRPLATE) with NITROFOAM Elite, its highest-return foam, wrapped in a featherweight ULTRAWEAVE upper and a PUMAGRIP outsole. PUMA says it posted the best running economy of any road shoe in its own testing.

The launch colorway is PUMA Black-Lime Squeeze (style 314984_04), a stealth black upper sitting on a glowing lime sculpted midsole that looks like it was poured rather than glued. "With the Fast-RB 2, we set out to take rule breaking to the next level," says Romain Girard, PUMA's VP of innovation. Japan is getting just 100 pairs at ¥66,000, sold through the PUMA app, PUMA Store Harajuku Cat Street, PUMA Store Osaka and a couple of specialty running shops, so this is not a pair you'll find gathering dust on a wall.

Our take: we love that PUMA is treating the rulebook as a suggestion. You can't wear these in your next sanctioned marathon, so the real audience is the Saturday long-run crowd and the collectors who want the wildest midsole on the block. At €350 it is priced like a concept car, and honestly it looks like one too. If it feels anywhere near as fast as it looks, the group run is about to get a lot less friendly.
