Nike is putting the Air Force 1 in a fur coat again. The Air Force 1 QS "Team Red" (IR1940-600) now has an official SNKRS launch: Wednesday, October 21 at 10 AM ET, for $140. The whole shoe is Team Red on Team Red on Team Red, and the upper is covered in pony hair over genuine leather. Nike calls it a premium twist on the classic. We'd call it the AF1 that needs a lint roller.
This one has been floating around since early September, when House of Heat reported that longtime Nike designer Frank Cooke previewed it on Instagram Stories. It follows the "Campfire Orange" pony-hair Air Force 1 that came out in early August, and like that pair it's part of Nike Sportswear's Quickstrike catalog, so House of Heat expects limited numbers. Nike's launch page fills in the rest: the long, shaggy hair runs over the toe, quarter and heel, with smooth red leather at the eyestays and tongue, a red midsole with "AIR" on the side, and red laces to match.
Our take: the pony-hair AF1 is a love-it-or-leave-it shoe, and Nike knows it. The "Campfire Orange" pair split people right down the middle. Team Red is the easier sell, though. A deep, all-over red reads more like a velvet smoking jacket than a craft-store project, and it's very on time for a season when fuzzy, hairy and slightly unhinged footwear is everywhere. Wear them with grey work pants like Nike's on-foot shot and keep the rest of the outfit quiet. Just don't wear them in the rain.
