Converse Japan Stitches a Cowboy Boot Onto the All Star, Out October 23

Two pairs of Converse All Star Westernstitch SU HI sneakers, one tan and one black, with white western-boot stitching and stars, laid on a worn parquet floor next to an old cobbler's box

Converse Japan is giving the Chuck a pair of cowboy boots. The All Star Westernstitch SU HI releases Friday, October 23, through the Converse official online shop in Japan and its stockists there. It costs ¥17,600 with tax, comes in Tan and Black, and runs from 22.0 to 28.0 cm, plus 29.0 and 30.0. Converse Japan announced it in a press release and on its official X account.

The idea is simple and it works. Converse takes a high-top All Star, wraps it in short-nap suede, and runs big decorative stitching up the sides, the kind you'd see on a western boot. Then it hides little stars in the stitch pattern, because of course it does. The soles match the uppers, brown on the tan pair and black on the black pair, so the whole thing reads more like a boot than a sneaker. Under the suede, it uses Converse's updated All Star build, which the brand says is lighter, softer and more flexible than the old one. Fullress lists the style codes as 31319430 and 31319431.

Western is everywhere this fall. We've already seen it from Saucony's Space Cowboy capsule and Sneaker Politics and Timberland. What we like about this one is that it doesn't dress up in a costume. There's no fringe, no spurs and no fake snakeskin, just good suede and some very confident thread. The tan pair looks like it has already been to a few rodeos and has stories. The black pair is for people who like the idea of a cowboy boot but still want to wear it to a show in December. This is also Converse Japan doing what it does best, taking the most familiar sneaker in the world and changing just enough to make you look twice.

For now this is a Japan release, and Converse hasn't said anything about a US date.
