Converse Japan Waxes the All Star Coinloafer, With a Coin You Can Flip, Out October 23

Converse Japan keeps turning the All Star into things your grandfather would wear to church, and we keep falling for it. The All Star Coinloafer Waxed Leather takes the penny-loafer version of the Chuck and wraps it in waxed leather made to scuff, darken and age the more you wear it. It's out October 23 in Japan for ¥22,000, per Fullress and Converse Japan's product page.

The fun part is the strap. Instead of a penny, there's a coin with the All Star ankle-patch star on one side and the "ALL★STAR" logo on the other. Flip it to switch sides, or pop it off for a plain strap. Underneath, Converse pairs an open-cell urethane foam insole with an EVA wedge, so it's meant to be worn all day, not just to a wedding. There are two colors: Dark Brown (31319360) and Vintage Black (31319361).

Our take: the sneaker-loafer stopped being a joke a while ago, and the Coinloafer is one of the better ones because it doesn't hide what it is: a Chuck with a strap and better manners. Waxed leather is the right move. These will look better in six months than they do out of the box. Dark Brown is the pick. Vintage Black is for people who own one belt.
