Nike is putting four of its loudest classics in a kilt. The women's "Plaid Pack" runs a red tartan (black, white and a few yellow threads) across the Air Force 1 Low, Air Max 90, Air Max Plus and Shox TL, all on mostly black bases. Per Hypebeast, which posted the official images this morning, the pack releases October 22 through Nike, priced ¥17,600 to ¥29,700 (roughly $111 to $188).
The fun part is that each shoe uses a different amount of plaid. The Air Force 1 Low (IR5596-001) plays it safest: black leather toe, eyestays and Swoosh, with tartan only on the quarter panels and heel tab over an all-black sole. The Air Max 90 mixes black mesh with fuzzy suede-like overlays, deep Team Red eyelets and Swooshes, and puts the tartan around the collar and heel.
The Air Max Plus goes furthest. Most of the upper is tartan under the black TPU cage, with glossy black mudguards, black Air tooling and small Yellow Ochre hits on the outsole. The Shox TL puts the same fabric under its black skeletal cage, adds glossy black Shox columns and a dark leather heel, and ends up the most Y2K of the four. Style codes on the pack are IR5596-001, IR5598-002, IR5731-600 and IM5167-002. Fullress reported in early October that the pack lands on Nike's Japanese site October 22 at 9 a.m. local time, which is 8 p.m. ET on October 21. Nike hasn't posted a US date yet.
Our take: tartan on sneakers usually reads either Scottish heritage or a 1977 London gig, and black-on-black with Tough Red points straight at the gig. The AF1 is the one you can wear to work without anybody asking questions. The Air Max Plus is the one people will notice from across the street. The Shox TL looks like it's on its way to a Halloween party as a very well-dressed robot. Nike calls it a cold-weather pack, but nothing here is actually built for winter. It just looks warm.
