Nike's Doernbecher Freestyle 22 Lets Six Kids Design an Air Max 1/97, a Rodeo AF1 Mid and More

Nike just pulled the wraps off Doernbecher Freestyle 22, and once again the best sneaker designers in Portland are kids. The program pairs six patients from OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital with Nike designers, and each kid builds a shoe around their own story. The collection was unveiled on Friday, October 16, at a charity auction at the Portland Art Museum. According to Sneaker News, a wider U.S. release follows in January through SNKRS and select retailers, and every one of the six silhouettes is making its Doernbecher debut.

The lineup reads like six very different personalities, which is the point. Owen William Flint, a kidney transplant recipient, put superheroes, baseball and dirt biking on the Air Max 1/97: his jersey number 88, mud-splattered panels and a little dirt bike keychain. It's the first time the 1/97 hybrid has come back since Sean Wotherspoon's 2018 pair, and honestly, this one has more going on. Avery Wilson filled a women's Air Jordan 11 Low IE with original characters, including Greg, a posh British alien. The word "neurospicy" nods to her experience with OCD, and a license plate pin reading 143, for "I love you," honors her grandfather.

Charlye Cosgrove based her women's ACG Rufus on the pink camo shoes she wore as a baby, with fuzzy green trim meant to look like Pacific Northwest moss and an upper that shows hidden graphics in sunlight. Under a stitched tag sits June 11, 2025, the day she finished treatment for bone cancer. Royce Short took the Air Force 1 Mid to the rodeo: a belt buckle closure, rope laces, branding for his future bucking bull company and a giant bass on the outsole. Aurora Loss, another kidney transplant recipient, went full kawaii on a women's Structure Plus with pink fur, cherry blossoms, a removable hair bow and a detachable charm bracelet, all built around her dream of opening a "cutsie hotel." And Kamoryn Marshall turned a titanium hip replacement at age 12 into a GT Future with goldfish details, a chrome Swoosh for the titanium and hidden stitching for his scar. The outsole reads, "If you see this, you're too late," which is the best trash talk any shoe has had all year.

Our take: most collabs are a celebrity picking two colors and a font. These are six kids putting their actual lives on a shoe, and it shows in every charm, tag and outsole message. Doernbecher pairs also tend to disappear fast, partly because they're good and partly because people want a piece of the cause. Since 2004 the program has raised more than $44 million for the hospital, according to the OHSU Foundation. If you're shopping for one sneaker this winter that does some good, this is the one to set an alarm for.
