ASICS has had a busy collab year, and atmos just added another one. atmos Indonesia is putting its name on the ASICS GEL-Kayano 12.1 "Archipelago" (1203B092-100), a pair inspired by the thousands of islands that make up Indonesia. Sneaker News reports it drops October 15, only through atmos.
Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, so the theme makes sense. The island greenery shows up on the midsole, tongue and heel in a deep forest green that could pass for jungle or ocean, depending on the light. Everything else stays calm: cream and grey mesh with synthetic leather overlays, a tan outsole underneath, and bright red insoles with atmos x ASICS stamps. That's the only real co-branding, which is a nice change from collabs that print logos on every flat surface.
The photos do a lot of work here too. The pair is shot on moss, on tree bark, and on people hanging out on a sofa and next to a red scooter, which is about as close to a vacation as a sneaker campaign gets.
Our take: the GEL-Kayano 12.1 has turned into one of ASICS's best canvases, and this one gets the balance right. It's mostly neutral, so it goes with almost anything, but the green gives it a real point of view. The red insole is the hidden detail you'll notice every time you put it on. If you've been waiting for a Kayano that isn't just silver and white, this is it. Getting one may be the hard part, since it's an atmos-only release.
