Reebok is getting into the carbon-plate fight. The Reebok SpeedShifter, which the brand calls its first full-length carbon-plated running shoe, goes on sale Tuesday, October 20 at 10:00 AM ET on Reebok.com for $220. Reebok's product page lists it in two unisex colorways: Red/White/Blue (100256225) and White/Black (100263924).
Reebok first showed the shoe in mid-September, ahead of the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, and the recipe is what you'd expect from a modern race-day shoe. There's a full-length carbon plate for that springy, tipping-forward feel, plus a new, very light foam Reebok calls HyperFloat. Per House of Heat, it has an 8mm heel-to-toe drop and weighs about 7.4 ounces (209.8 grams). Reebok's own description says the foam "feels crazy light," which is a rare bit of honesty from a spec sheet.
"The shoe was engineered to feel propulsive with a full-length carbon plate and all-new lightweight HYPERFLOAT foam," Reebok product director Chris Stone said in the launch press release. Reebok ultrarunner Lydia Oldham, also quoted in the release, says it lets her "lock in and go the distance."

Our take: for most of the past decade, Reebok has been known for basketball, Club Cs and gym shoes, and when people started arguing about super shoes, Reebok wasn't really part of the conversation. A $220 carbon racer is a real statement. The red-to-blue fade looks fast standing still, and the White/Black pair is the one you could also wear to brunch after the long run. Whether it can hang with the established race shoes is a question for the stopwatch, not for us. But it's fun to see Reebok chasing a PR instead of just selling the sweatpants for afterward.
